The 1850 census is considered the first of the “modern census.” It was the first to provide great vital information on all members at a residence, by enumerating their age and birth location. The 1850 census also provided more in depth information on the economic status of our ancestors. Part of the problem stems from the actual designations made by the census marshals on the manuscript schedules (designations that were not corrected or explained in the microfilm edition). The confusion brought about by those designations has been compounded by inconsistencies in the citations contained in the Accelerated Indexing Systems, Inc. index to the 1850 Louisiana census. The 1850 census was the first US census to list the names of each individual in the household (earlier ones had listed only the heads of household).
