 The TMJ is a ginglymoarthrodial joint, a term that is derived from ginglymus, meaning a hinge joint, allowing motion only backward and forward in one plane, and arthrodia, meaning a joint of which permits a gliding motion of the surfaces. The temporomandibular joint, commonly referred to as TMJ, is located in your jaw and is perhaps one of the most utilized joints in the body. It is a hinge joint that connects your jaw to your skull in front of your ear. It guides jaw movement and allows you to open and close your mouth, and move it from side to side when yawning, or chewing. The temporomandibular joint is the joint that provides your mandible, or jawbone, its range of motion.

Forward movement of the body of the mandible is held in check by two ligaments that lie outside the temporomandibular joint. We’ll add these to the picture after we’ve looked at the four principal muscles that move the jaw. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of both techniques, as well as movement distances and directions, on the position of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). A total of 80 mandibular movements were performed on 20 fresh human cadaver heads, four on each head. WHAT IS THE TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT?

It is located anteriorly to the tragus of the ear, on the lateral aspect of the face. In this article, we shall look at the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint – its articulating surfaces, ligaments and clinical correlations. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the mandible or the lower jaw to the skull and regulates the movement of the jaw (see Figure 1). The TMJ is one of the most complex, delicate and highly used joints in a human body (Alomar et al., 2007).

The temporomandibular joints are the connections between the temporal bones of the skull and the lower jawbone (mandible). There are two temporomandibular joints, one on each side of the face just in front of the ears. Ligaments, tendons, and muscles support the joints and are responsible for jaw movement. GLENOID FOSSA—ARTICULAR EMINENCE . The glenoid , or mandibular fossa , is the concavity within the temporal bone that houses the mandibular condyle. Its anterior wall is built by the articular eminence of the squamous temporal bone and its posterior wall by the tympanic plate of the temporal bone, which also forms the anterior wall of the external acoustic meatus.
