2020-07-24 Before this rule I find the size of devices by cat /sys/block/sda/size and cat /sys/block/sdb/size which is described here : Finding information from sysfs. But when I try to test the udev rule by udevadm test /sys/block/sdb I see this line in the output: The reason (S)ATA disks are also listed as SCSI disks is, SCSI commands pretty much provides a superset of features that can be provided by ATA commands, therefore modern systems (including Windows, AFAIK) will have an implementation of SCSI-ATA Translation Layer (SATL) in the system (in Linux it is provided by the libata driver) to talk to the (S)ATA disks, while the upper layer of the system … 2010-01-10 Basically, installing to SDA won't limit your Ubuntu installation. You can always put files on SDB. However, you can also, so long as there are no files or any Windows installations you wish to keep intact, just combine the two partitions to give Ubuntu the entire 256GB of space.

If the sdadrive has 3 partitions on it, these will be named sda1, sda2, and Essentially, what it does is "If model is samsung, assign it NAME sda*. If model is not Samsung, but has been assigned sda*, assign it NAME sdb*." This rule was placed before all other rules as much as possible. So when Linux initially began to load, the USB hard disk was designated as sdb, and the computer's internal hard drive was sda. However, once my Linux installation had actually loaded up fully, I found that the USB hard disk was now sda, and the internal hard disk had changed to sdb??? At first I didn't think this was too big a deal. Therefore, I would set up Ubuntu to use sda for the operating system and programs (root) as well as the swap partition.
@NathanShiraini Det här är en bra idé

Im having a problem, my primary partition is running out of space. Due to this, I can't access linux machine remotely (through vncserver). I have another drive (/dev/sdb) having much more free space. I want to shrink space from (/dev/sdb) and extend to (/dev/sda1) partition which is my primary partition and have all linux boot, kernel etc files.
I want to detach sdb and sdc temporarily for OS upgrade. How exactly can I tell which disk is which?

Note that if you have two SCSI host bus adapters (i.e., controllers),the order of the drives can get confusing. first device ==> internal HDD (linux gets /dev/sda) second device ==> internal SDD (linux gets /dev/sdb) third device ==> drive bay in docking station (linux gets /dev/sdc if an HDD) IMPORTANT -- I hope that there is some way to configure linux such that the SDD appears as /dev/sda and the HDD appears as /dev/sdb.

And "/sda" is written in the "bootmap" file. While the system boot, if it finds "/sda" inside "bootmap", the drive is mapped to /dev/sda. If it finds "/sdb", it maps to /dev/sdb. And so on.
Restore sda using disk image Usually disk drives on Linux are named /dev/sda (first HDD), /dev/sdb (second HDD) or something similar. You can get a list of disk drives in system using this command. fdisk -l | grep '^Disk' The output should be something like this: Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes fdiskコマンドの結果から、接続されているハードディスクのデバイス名が、/dev/sda と/dev/sdb という事がわかります。 このコマンド実行前に、5GBのハードディスクを追加しています。 Look for entries like sda, sda1, sdb. Under the Linux-2.6 series of kernels this problem may be very neatly resolved . In the descriptions further on, it will be assumed that only one memory stick is present, and therefore mapped to /dev/sda. In most distributions these points exist in abundance.
